The Patient Reports In

Hi, all – thanks for the emails, comments and tweets while I was in the hospital. I’m finally awake enough to write a little about what happened/will happen next, so here goes… Three years ago I had surgery to correct a situation in my abdomen, and the condition returned. This surgery was to stop the situation once and for all. It turned out to be  a little more involved than we thought – when my doc got a look in my abdomen, she found a lot of scar tissue (adhesions)...

A Few Last Things

Prepping: A few more chores around the house and I’ll be ready for a good long sleep and surgery tomorrow. (UCSF Mt Zion at 11 am PT, if you wanna send positive vibes my way.) I may be home tomorrow night, or Friday or Saturday – it just depends on how things go. I’ve got folks lined up to stay with my Sebastian cat and others to bring me home and bring me home cooked meals. Time to pamper the princess! 🙂 I’m looking forward to ending the losses (2 cats and now a body...

So Much to Do, So Little Time…

Scramblin’: The rudiments of spring cleaning must take place this weekend. I’m finally feeling halfway decently – slept fairly well without Nyquil – but I need to avoid wearing myself out. Today is unclutter day, tomorrow is clean, clean, clean day. Then I can spend Monday through Wednesday evenings taking care of the straggling chores and errands to prep my place for after-surgery inactivity. Tuesday I’m off for pre-op tests and that’s when I’ll find...

This May Take A Little While…

April 6 – Got word at work that we three writers have been moved to the awesome management tutlege of Vanessa Cho.  This move resolved a great number of issues that had arisen over the last few months and gave us all a sense of hope and possibility for the future. It also helped ensure that my fellow writers and I won’t likely bolt out of abject frustration. Meanwhile, I’ve never felt so tired… April 7 – Big handoff deadline at work tomorrow and of course I now...

A Day in the Life

6:00 AM: Woke up, got out of bed, dragged the cat across my head…oh wait. Wrong life. Staggered into the kitchen to the lovely tones of squalling felines wanting their breakfast. Decided I wanted bacon (love it, but limit it) so I had to live through even more squalling felines wanting MY breakfast. New kitty (Felix) turned up his nose when presented with his offering of fried pig. He’s a strange little dood… 7:00 AM: Armed with personalized presale code, jumped online and...

A Broken Record…

Racing: Formula 1 is off to an upside-down, totally exciting start; NASCAR is NASCAR; and my IndyCars start their engines this weekend in St. Petersburg, FL. That’s great news, but you know I have to ask: Is it MAY yet? Life: I really need surgery. I coulda had it earlier, but one of my coworkers is on leave now (due back April 20) and I didn’t want to leave the other one alone. (Seriously worried neither will be there when I get back in June, as it is.) So it’s surgery May...

Quick Update

Health – Surgery May 7th – off work for 6 weeks. Looking forward to feeling better, but I will not be able to attend the Indy 500 this time around. Too soon for travel and all that walking… Work – Insanely busy. Working on some really interesting projects, but they’re all happening at once. Cats – Felix had a bad tummy but the vet fixed that up for him and he’s back to his cute little kitten self. Sebastian is doing fine. Music – So it happened...

Radio Silence

Keying the Mic: Is this thing on? Ah, yes. Now, what to write…?  Guess it’ll be a roundup. Life: Busy. Reading, writing and following racing and Tour of California and baseball’s about to start. Health: Not so great. I need more surgery and it won’t wait all year…I have a visit with my specialist March 9th to get a read on where things stand. Work: Hooo, boy. Crazy busy projects, more on the way, with the terrain constantly changing. Other things are changing, as...

Fifty Two Buck Chuck

Conve(r)sed: Okay, it’s closer to Fifty Five Buck Chuck(s), but that just doesn’t have the same ring. Bought my first pair of high top Chucks, which arrived today. My choice: the latest entry in the Product (Red) artist series – #100 Edges of a Star, designed by U2 guitarist The Edge: There’s a red stripe up the heel to compliment the the red star at the ankle. Now if it will stop raining long enough for me to wear them… (not much worse than soggy Chucks…)

Go Davey J.!

New Lights Team: Glad to see Davey Hamilton’s started an Indy Lights team and will run full season, hopefully with two cars. And he’s set to announce his deal to drive in this year’s Indy 500 later this month. Good to see him getting involved in this level of racing, with an eye towards moving up to IndyCar.  You can read all about it here. Is it May yet?

Is Wilson Justin Time, Or Will Penske Corner the Market on Ryans?

Helio Out: Just recently, Team Penske vowed to stand by Helio Castroneves as he faced tax evasion charges, hoping to put him in the car at the beginning of the season if he was acquitted quickly. Something has apparently changed very quickly in Helio’s case, because Penske will hold a press conference tomorrow to announce Helio’s replacement in the #3 car. Names like Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay are floating (imagine Ryan being teammates with Penske #6 Ryan...

Lots of Catch-up

Sabrina: I miss my little angel so much…she was the pet love of my life and I’m still having dreams about trying to protect her and occasionally wake up in tears. Just gotta grieve my way through it, I guess. Sebastian: He’s been so bummed without his little Brina Bean to play and snuggle with. He’s extra-clingy and only eats well if I sit with him. I’ve been giving him as much attention I can. SF SPCA: I stopped by Saturday on an errand and walked through the...

Rest in Peace, My Sabrina Kitty

Goodbye, Angel: Sabrina declined very quickly Tuesday – trouble breathing, not eating, drinking loads of water and at the end of the day, drooling a lot. We went to the vet yesterday and learned that, although they could try to pull her through this episode, she would likely relapse soon due to her extremely bad heart. So we said goodbye yesterday – no more suffering for her, and no more suffering for her for me. The last two months have been hard, watching her slow down a little...

Sinusitis and Ear Infection…Whee.

Achy, Breaky Bash: No fever, but the clogged, ringing ear continues.  Joining it is massive post-nasal sinus congestion, a sore throat and ear, and body aches. I went to the Mission’s Quick Health clinic today for a check-up – no wax in ears, throat and ears look normal, so it’s really in the sinuses and Eustachian tube. I’m taking antibiotics, decongestant and loads of Advil and spent the afternoon asleep. The ear could take weeks to clear and my hearing could take...

Sick Again…

Nyquil to the Rescue!: Right ear has been clogged and ringing for a week and I’ve been pretty congested. But this morning, I woke up with a sore throat and some discomfort in the clogged ear. Ugh. Ran out for errands (see below for a fun sighting along the way) and am now home, dosed on Nyquil and ready to doze/read for the rest of the day. Meanwhile, Santarchy Reigns (Reins?): San Franciscans are participating in SantaCon 08 today, a flash mob of people dressed as Santas, reindeer and...

iPhone Snaps

Busy: Lots happening with work, volunteering, reading, cats, etc. Mainly, it’s the usual, so I won’t write much. Just wanted to post some iPhone pics I’ve taken lately. Sleeping on His Head: I love when Sebastian is sitting up straight, then tucks his nose between his front paws and takes a nap without lying down. So funny. Mobile Joe – Really?: I saw this in downtown San Francisco the other day…a mobile Starbucks. Ironically, there are at least four Starbucks...

Racefans – Check Out the “I am Mindy” Podcast!

From the Maker(s) of My Name is IRL: Jeff Iannucci blends his slightly sarcastic wit and his love of all things IndyCar in the audio realm with his new podcast, I am Mindy (a play on the league theme song “I am Indy”). On his first show, he chats with fellow blogger Bill Zahren (you know, Pressdog!) about Penske Racing’s Helio dilemma and the ethanol debacle, plus gives us a news roundup with a Danica report from the crack on-the-scene reporter, P1. Follow the I am Mindy link...

Another Check In

Sabrina: She’s been eating a lot better in the last 2-3 days and has been a little more active. In the short term, that’s good news. Work: Chasing last minute updates before the site sees it’s highest traffic of the year on Friday and Monday. Have really done nothing else today but try to get one change approved and implemented. I have to get approvals from very busy VPs who are in meetings all day, so forward progress is slow. Turkey Day: Gonna roast me a bird, make some...

Quick Check-in

On Watch: Have spent the last three days keeping an eye on Sabrina and trying to get her to eat. She’s very still most of the time and occasionally a little wobbly when she walks. It’s breaking my heart to see her decline like this…

Smoke Signals Farewell

Decade: Ten years in NASCAR’s top tier series with the same team and the same crew chief is an accompishment in itself, but add in 33 victories and two championships and you have something special. Something special came to an end when the checkered flag fell on the final race of 2008 today and Tony Stewart turned his final lap for Joe Gibbs Racing. He didn’t manage to win one (more) for the Gibber, but they had a strong showing, leading for a few laps in the final stages of the...

Telegraph Hill

New Favorite: Although I’ve lived here since 1997, I’ve never visited the San Francisco neighborhood of Telegraph Hill (other than a trip up to Coit Tower) until this weekend. The reason: bad knees. Most of the “streets” on Telegraph Hill are steep staircases, stone paths and boardwalks, cutting through lush gardens that grow down the steep slope, framing adorable cottages and apartment buildings. The trees and bushes host the city’s famous Wild Parrots, a flock of...

Happy Birthday, Me!

Chillin’: Taking the day off to do whatever or nothing at all today. Lounging with a stack of magazines, a box of truffles, two kitties and a few warm blankets sounds like the right way to spend my afternoon…dinners and lunches with friends are planned for later in the week.
